From the 2008-2018 period, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics <a href="http://www.bls.gov/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">projects that there will be a significant increase in certain travel-related occupations with the biggest gains going to hotel, motel, and resort desk clerk positions. Tour guides, flight attendants, reservation ticket agents, and lodging managers will also have more openings. The only group that is expected to lose jobs is travel agents.
Travel jobs projected (Chart)

It’s not surprising that there will be increases in many of the travel-related jobs. Travel to the United States is projected to increase over the 2008-2018 period and that will require more personnel. Much of the loss in the travel agent field can be attributed to the use of Internet websites to book airlines and hotels.

An industry negative is that the two groups that receive the lowest wages are also the occupations that are expected to grow the most by percentage: hotel, motel, and resort desk clerks plus tour guides.

Ever wonder which regions around the world have the most travelers? According to the World Tourism Organization or <a href="http://unwto.org/en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">UNWTO, Europeans travel more than all other regions combined with a whopping 52.8 percent of all outbound tourists. Asia and the Pacific (21 percent) and the Americas (16 percent) make up most of the rest of the outbound travelers with the Middle East (3.8 percent) and Africa (2.9 percent) rounding out the field.
Who travels the most by region [Data © UNWTO and Chart © Enduring Wanderlust]

It’s not surprising that Europe lands in the number one spot, but it’s eye-opening that more Europeans travel than the rest of the world as a group. Despite the massive population advantage of the Asian region, it’s still curious that the Americas fell behind that area. The Americas had more tourists from 1990-2005, but Asia and the Pacific has maintained the lead since 2005. That said, it’s nice to see that all regions have seen significant gains in overall outbound tourists in the past two decades.

The past few years has seen a gradually increasing shift from surface transport to air transport for travelers. Slightly over half of tourists arrived at their destination via air travel (51%) last year versus surface travel. The latter consisted of road (41%), rail (2%), and water (6%) transport according to the World Tourism Organization (<a href="http://unwto.org/en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">UNWTO).

It’s not surprising that air travel has increased as it has become cheaper in a lot of countries especially in Europe where rail travel has been a popular mode of transport in the past. That said, it’s a bit astonishing that rail travel is only 2% internationally considering the sheer number of tourists that travel by rail between European countries. On a side note, it would be interesting to know how much of the road travel is by bus versus automobile.

The National Trust for <a href="http://www.preservationnation.org"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Historic Preservation designates a dozen distinctive places each year for Americans or foreigners to visit. These cities and towns offer an authentic visitor experience with emphasis placed on locations that meet the following criteria: dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization.
America’s Distinctive Destinations [Map © Enduring Wanderlust]

These 12 cities and towns (in alphabetical order by city) are:

	1.	Alexandria, Virginia
2.	Chapel Hill, North Carolina
3.	Colorado Springs, Colorado
4.	Dandridge, Tennessee
5.	Eureka, California
6.	Muskogee, Oklahoma
7.	New Bedford, Massachusetts
8.	Paducah, Kentucky*
9.	Saint Paul, Minnesota
10.	San Angelo, Texas
11.	Sheridan, Wyoming
12.	Sonoma, California

*Paducah, Kentucky was voted Fan Favorite Distinctive Destinations.

This is the perfect list for people looking to avoid American vacation spots that are overrun by tourists. Many are small towns with a lot to offer including historic downtowns and friendly locals. While there are a handful of places that might be on your list to visit already, most will be new places to consider for your next trip. Plus at least a couple of spots are likely close to where any American lives since the map above reveals that the locations are spread throughout the country.

Travel Magazines With the Highest Circulation (United States)

1. National Geographic 4,493,024
2. Via Magazine (AAA) 2,740,435
3. AAA Living 2,469,830
4. AAA Going Places 2,404,121
5. Sunset 1,259,750
12. Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel 680,097
13. Coastal Living 671,023

It’s surprising to see so many AAA publications* on the list, but note that these often come with a membership to the American Automobile Association based on region. It’s also interesting that more than half the list focus on a specific area of the country rather than being national or international. Coastal Living and Midwest Living are two examples of that.

*An editorial decision was made to take two other magazines from AAA off the Audit Bureau of Circulations list because they’re actually closer to books (AAA Tourbooks and AAA Campbooks) in our view.

Each year, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) collects data on the international tourist arrivals for every country in the world. The most visited countries for the past year included six from Europe, two from North America, and two from Asia (see map and list below).
Most visited countries in the world [Map © Enduring Wanderlust]

1. France 76.8 million visitors
2. United States 59.7 million visitors
3. China 55.7 million visitors
4. Spain 52.7 million visitors
5. Italy 43.6 million visitors
6. United Kingdom 28.1 million visitors
7. Turkey 27 million visitors
8. Germany 26.9 million visitors
9. Malaysia 24.6 million visitors
10. Mexico 22.4 million visitors
*Statistics from the <a href="http://unwto.org/en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">UNWTO

China made the biggest jump passing Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom to reach third on the list. Another Asian country, Malaysia, is a surprising entry in the top ten most popular countries to visit. A past visit to Kuala Lumpur leads me to believe this is largely based on business travelers to the capital city. The rest of the list especially France, Spain, Italy, and the United States have been mainstays for many years.

Another important note from the UNWTO study was that world tourism arrivals went up this past year after dropping in the previous year. That was the first drop in overall tourism in the past two decades.

World tourism arrivals reaches 940 million in 2010 according to the <a href="http://unwto.org/en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The majority or 51 percent of the international tourists were motivated to travel for leisure, recreation, and vacations. Another 27 percent were driven to visit family and friends (VFR) or to make religious pilgrimages to places such as Mecca, Jerusalem, and the Vatican. Business travelers rounded out the group of inbound tourists with a showing of 15 percent.

It’s striking that holiday tourism more than doubled business travel and VFR combined. In addition to the statistics related to purpose of tourism, the overall numbers showed a recovery for international tourism from the past couple of years along with the continued increase of air transport versus ground travel.

A recent Hilton Garden Inn <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=88577&p=irol-newsArticleOther&ID=1396246&highlight="target="blank"rel="nofollow">survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp. revealed that female business travelers enjoy hotel perks most when traveling for work. Specifically, women enjoyed having someone clean up after them (71% vs. 58% for men) along with having breakfast prepared for them (62% vs. 49% for men). The majority of women also appreciated having a bed to themselves for the night (51% vs. 37% for men).

The survey results may be attributed to women doing more of the cleaning and cooking at home. A Swedish researcher <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1289318/Women-feel-guiltier-going-business-trips-men-worry-away-home.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">found that women are still expected to prioritize their homes and children because of deeply-rooted perceptions of gender roles, and conventional overnight work travel is not compatible with this norm. Regardless of the reasons for the findings, it would be smart of hotels that cater to women business travelers to take note.

The Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn is home to several of the tastiest cupcakes in New York City. Bakeries have been competing for two decades to win over the growing customer base for the small cake designed to satiate one person. Three Park Slope spots have developed cupcakes that would satisfy even the toughest critics.
Butter Lane Cupcakes, Park Slope, Brooklyn © Gennaro Salamone

<a href="http://www.butterlane.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Butter Lane Cupcakes recently opened a Park Slope location after years in the East Village. Their French and American buttercream icing is extraordinary especially on top of a Sea Salted Chocolate cupcake. The general feel of the place is a lot better than the previous occupant — King of Cupcakes. There is a bench for two in front of the shop that might remind Sex and the City fans of the one Carrie and Miranda sat on in a July 2000 episode while munching on cupcakes and chatting about Carrie’s new crush on Aiden.

A little further down 7th Avenue is <a href="http://www.crespellabk.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Crespella, which specializes in crepes, but is also a retailer for <a href="http://robicellis.tumblr.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Robicelli’s cupcakes. Found in locations throughout the city, Robicelli’s has delectable flavors including S’Mores, cheesecake buttercream, and apricot chardonnay cake. For chocolate lovers, head over to <a href="http://www.ladybirdbakery.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Ladybird Bakery (formerly Two Little Red Hens Bakery) on 8th Avenue for their Brooklyn Blackout cupcake. It consists of chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, chocolate frosting, and lots of chocolate sprinkles across the top.

What is the best car rental company? According to a <a href="http://www.concierge.com/tools/travelawards/readerschoice/transportation"target="blank"rel="nofollow">survey by Condé Nast Traveler: Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis top the list. The results, which take into account rates, reliability, locations, and vehicle options were not overly surprising as these companies are some of the largest car rental companies. In addition, many of the agencies on the list are at the forefront of new developments in the industry. Hertz recently announced one-way <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703440004575548370158057174.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">rentals that will allow consumers to drop off a car at an airport instead of an original pick-up spot. This is particularly helpful for international and out-of-state travelers. Enterprise and Avis, on the other hand, are pioneering <a href="http://gas2.org/2010/10/13/avis-enterprise-to-roll-out-electric-car-rentals-in-2011/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">electric car rentals for the upcoming year.
Hertz Car Rental Counter <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/legalcode"target="blank"rel="nofollow"> © Dierk Schaefer

It’s not just travelers who are benefiting from the innovations by the leading car rental companies. Newer companies such as <a href="http://www.zipcar.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Zipcar are attempting to shift urban centers from car owners and renters to car-sharing members. Their hope is that major cities around the globe will embrace their on-demand mobility model. While this is a popular method in European cities, it will be more difficult to push through in the United States where car ownership is ingrained in the culture. That said, an emphasis on being green has taken afoot in certain segments of the population.

For the companies that didn’t perform well in the survey such as Dollar and Thrifty, it would benefit them to re-evaluate their products and services as it will prevent them from being associated with the worst car rental companies.

On a trip to Spain, I remember several cities with statues honoring bullfighters. Locals told stories of the heroic Spanish matadors. Watching the bullfighters in the toreo de salón is a popular tourist attraction though some object to it calling the spectacle barbaric. If you find the agility and skill of the torero to be alluring, it’s possible to take an intensive training course that will teach the fundamentals of becoming a matador. That includes fearlessness, graceful movements, and improved coordination.
Matador in Spain <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/legalcode" target="blank"rel="nofollow"> © Paul Hartrick

Two options for training to become a bullfighter are the <a href="http://www.dennisborba.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Dennis C. Borba Bullfighting School and the <a href="http://www.bullfightschool.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">California Academy of Tauromaquia. The former offers workshops lasting three days. Be aware that the class doesn’t come without risk. The <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703467004575464074283480564.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">WSJ reported that one man’s cape got caught under the animal’s hoof knocking him to the floor. Though the trainer, Dennis Borba was quick to intercede. As Ernest Hemingway wrote in Death in the Afternoon, “bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death.” The latter choice has intensive classes located in San Diego, California and Mexico. The courses are completely bloodless and focus only on the moves and traditions of the bullfighters.

The Cambodian Cabinet <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/cambodia/7411757/Home-of-Khmer-Rough-leader-Pol-Pot-protected-as-tourist-attraction.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">voted to preserve 14 tourist sites that are connected to the Khmer Rouge regime. Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, was a totalitarian organization that ruled Cambodia from 1975-1979. The 14 sites that are being protected from illegal encroachment by locals will provide travelers with an opportunity to learn about the 1.5 million Cambodians who were murdered and tortured during that period. The targets of the regime were often city-dwellers who were educated or considered to be part of the intellectual elite.

Although beautiful Angkor Wat (see photos) is rightfully the most popular tourist destination for travelers headed to Cambodia, sites connected to the Khmer Rouge genocide are also important to visit. While The Killing Fields and <a href="http://www.tuolsleng.com/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum are already developed for tourism, newly developed stops in towns such as Anlong Veng (final resting place of Pol Pot) are welcomed additions.

United Airlines has decided to pass on credit-card fees to travel agents when customers book their trips with said agents. The <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20090630/ap_tr_ge/us_united_travel_agents;_ylt=ApPoKEehYH.Sd7SjanE6oev7Uc0F;_ylu=X3oDMTM0c2FjcjZqBGFzc2V0A2FwX3RyYXZlbC8yMDA5MDYzMC91c191bml0ZWRfdHJhdmVsX2FnZW50cwRwb3MDMQRzZWMDeW5fcGFnaW5hdGVfc3VtbWFyeV9saXN0BHNsawN1bml0ZWRwYXNzaW4-"target="blank"rel="nofollow">airline threated a $75 per ticket penalty to agents who charge the fee to United’s account. Increasing the cost of operations for agents has caused a ground swell of opposition. Agents claim that customers will eventually bear the burden of the shift if other airlines follow United’s lead. Earlier in the year, United Airlines made headlines by deciding to charge larger passengers for two seats instead of one.
United Airlines <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Matt Hisnta

It’s not a surprise that airlines are beginning to shift fees to travel agents. The industry is struggling with the downturn in the economy. In this case, agents are most likely correct in predicting that fees would eventually be passed on to consumers. It has become a pattern in the airline industry to use fees to keep airline tickets low in search engines, but keep the same profits coming in.

Is the shift in fees from airlines to agents and travelers a smart policy?

Bus travel in the United States has <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/travel/columnist/mcgee/2009-04-29-low-fare-bus-lines_N.htm"target="blank"rel="nofollow">increased (8.1% in 2007 and 9.8% in 2008) over the past couple of years. A nation that prides itself on traveling by automobile is starting to see ultra cheap bus tickets that are too attractive to pass up. In many cases, travelers are finding that it’s even more convenient than air travel. That’s especially true in the Northeast corridor with the popular route from New York to Boston that is served by Chinatown buses.
Chinatown Bus <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Naomi A.

Americans love their cars, but concerns over gas prices and the environment are likely to keep them open to alternatives. If buses prices continue to drop, inter-city bus travel will persevere in the coming years. That scenario is likely with the success of budget companies such as MegaBus and BoltBus. Throw in President Obama’s recent proposal for a high-speed <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/18/map-of-potential-high-spe_n_167804.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">rail, and the nation may be moving in a new direction.

Have you traveled by bus in the U.S.? Which route? How was it?

National Parks in the United States received $750 million from the economic stimulus in order to address much needed repairs and construction. The package will help to pay for over 750 projects across the country. A few of the repairs include work at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Ellis Island in New York, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, and multiple stop across the Appalachian Trail. A full list of the projects by state can be found at the Department of the Interior <a href="http://recovery.doi.gov/nps/"target="blank"rel="nofollow">website.
Castle Geyser, Yellowstone National Park <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Dominiqs

The National Park Service projects will address much needed maintenance across the nation. Though $750 million is a sizable amount with the current economic crisis, the preservation efforts will create 30,000 to 40,000 new <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2009-04-22-national-parks_N.htm"target="blank"rel="nofollow">jobs. If the United States wants to be serious about conservation, their parks must be kept in satisfactory condition. It’s no coincidence that the announcement of the funds landed on Earth Day. It’s meant to send a signal that the Obama Administration is committed to being green. Expect more projects that are funded by the federal government in the coming years.

United Airlines has decided to charge overweight passengers for two seats under certain conditions. The additonal fare would be required if the customers “are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; are <a href="http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52985,00.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat’s armrests down when seated.” United isn’t the first airline to introduce this policy as Southwest Airlines, Alaska Air Group, and Continental have similar <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123984032238623105.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">policies. Several of the airlines, including United, are willing to forgo the charge if there are empty seats on the flight.
United Airlines <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Steven Damron

Airlines have been on the defensive recently including RyanAir who is thinking about charging for toilet use and Spirit Airlines which was in a battle with their employees over a new apron policy. With consumer frustrations with airline policies, United is likely to take a few hits for their new guidelines. In their defense, United claims that this will policy will “help ensure that everyone’s travel experiences [is] comfortable and pleasant.”

Is United justified in charging certain passengers double the fare based on their size?

Mexico has been hit hard by the recent U.S. State Department travel alerts that were widely covered by the media. Fear of violence in connection with the war on drug traffickers is at the center of the problem. Spring-breakers who often travel to the country have avoided Mexico, in part, because of that issue. Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Rosarito Beach are among the popular <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20090406/ap_tr_ge/lt_travel_brief_spring_break_mexico_danger;_ylt=AqvUh0HaE8aLvcLRa8dPHKv7Uc0F"target="blank"rel="nofollow">spots that have seen a significant drop in travelers from last year. Fewer tourists means trouble for an economy that depends on travelers for much of its economic growth.
Mexican Beach <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Mdnys

With Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano recently saying that American tourists are not targets of the violence and should be safe in the tourist areas of Mexico, it’s a wonder why the media coverage was so extreme. There are certainly areas of Mexico that require caution for visitors, but few travelers venture into those places. It’s a matter of being informed before traveling. It’s a good idea to read the U.S. State Department’s <a href="http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/spring_break_mexico/spring_break_mexico_2812.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">document targeted at keeping spring-breakers safe. Consider reading a few blogs that cover travel in Mexico too, including <a href="http://travelojos.com/?p=689/trackback
"target="blank">Travelojos, for another view on the situation there.

Would a safety alert change your travel plans? if given the opportunity, would you visit Mexico this week.

Read about the U.S. Senate’s bill that would lift the travel ban to Cuba or the beautiful islands of Belize.

Over the past two years, women have surpassed men in the statistics measuring the total number of travelers. A nearly even breakdown in 2007 has changed to a 60 to 40 percent advantage in favor of female tourists. A significant portion of that 60 percent has chosen to travel <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS120130+31-Mar-2009+PRN20090331"target="blank"rel="nofollow">solo. Even married women are increasingly traveling alone or with girlfriends.
Solo Woman Traveler <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en"target="blank"rel="nofollow">© Morroia Fabrizio

The increase in women travelers is a fascinating trend. Even more so when coupled with the prospect of scores of female tourists wandering solo across the globe. In fact, an article in The Boston Globe was recently <a href="http://www.boston.com/travel/articles/2009/03/15/a_woman_traveling_alone_the_world_can_be_your_oyster_too/?page=1"target="blank"rel="nofollow">encouraging women to go at it alone claiming that locals would be eager to reach out to them. That being said, the main concern for women traveling solo continues to be safety. It’s important that solo travelers, especially women, take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe trip. The U.S. Department of State has a comprehensive <a href="http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html"target="blank"rel="nofollow">list to help tourists.

Have you traveled solo? Would you consider it? Any tips?
